Servicing Your Caravan or Trailer

Much like your car, your caravan or trailer requires a certain amount of servicing to keep it working at its best. Obviously there are legal issues to consider – if your trailer or caravan is a danger on the road then you’ll soon find yourself in trouble for it. But good, regular servicing and maintenance can also reward you with greater reliability and improved resale value.

Major Servicing

A comprehensive annual service is one of the most important parts of taking good care of your caravan. These services can be quite involved, as you have to get both the vehicle base and the habitation area serviced. The Approved Workshops Scheme (AWS) are generally very reliable, but not all of the members service the vehicle base, so make sure you pick one carefully.

For trailers, the service interval is recommended at around 6,000 miles. Failing to maintain your trailer properly can have disastrous consequences, especially if you tend to tow heavy loads on busy roads. Find a reputable trailer servicing engineer near you and make sure you keep on top of it.

Regular Checks

Outside of your major servicing, you should also make sure to keep up on your regular checks on the vehicle. A lot of the checks are similar to those you should be carrying out on your car – do the lights work, do you have correct tire pressure, etc. Some are more specific to your trailer or caravan, for example checking that there’s no play in the coupling and that any load is secured.

On a caravan, there are some additional checks to carry out in the habitation area, for example ensuring that your doors and windows are securely fastened. You should also check water, gas, and electrical connections to make sure they’re in good shape before you use them. Be especially vigilant with gas and electrical components, as these are potentially dangerous when not properly maintained.

Making sure your trailer or caravan is properly serviced shouldn’t be too great a burden, but it’s important to keep on top of it to ensure that nothing goes wrong.
